Sierra Nevada Cherry Chocolate Stout
Bottled. No Date. ABV 8.5%
Appearance: Black, Finger width head of root beer float head.
Palate: Cola, Cocoa Nibs, Cherry
Finish: Sweet, Dark Chocolate Bar, Hint of Coffee, Tart Cherry
Experience: Really looked forward to trying this beer. My boss surprised me with this beer. He picked it up in Chico. This was a really good beer that took me about an hour to finish because I savored every ship. This reminded me when I’m pairing red wine with chocolate and letting that chocolate sit and melt on my tongue (that was the flavor on the palate). Grade 5/5!
Bird Street Brewing 198 IPA
Bottled. No Date. ABV 7%
Appearance: Amber, Sligh Haze, Two fingers white fluffy head.
Aroma: Citrus, Orange Peel
Palate: Orange Peel, Slight Malt
Finish: Sweet, Slight Hops, Dry Mouth, Nutty
Experience: This is my first time having a beer from this brewery. Even for a beer with more a stronger malt backbone the hop combo of columbus, centeninal, mosaic, amarillo and el dorado mellowed it out and made the beer more enjoyable for my liking. Grade 4.6/5.
Sierra Nevada Know Good IPA
Bottled 8/9/17 (reviewed 9/4/17). ABV 6.2%
Appearance: Amber, Half finger soapy white head.
Palate: Hops, Citrus
Finish: Sweet, Smooth, Crisp
Experience: Wow! What a really well balanced IPA with good ABV to drink all day. My mind is blown away by the aroma of this beer and the taste is leaves on my palate. It is such a refreshing, hoppy IPA. This is one of the best IPAs I have had (definitely top 10). Grade 5/5!
Revision Brewing Co. What What (Dubious) DIPA
Bottled. No Date. ABV 9.1% IBUs 85
Appearance: Slight Hazy, Amber, Finger width fluffy white head.
Aroma: Dank, Lemon Zest, Orange Peel
Palate: Hop Heavy (YES YES YES!!), Light Malt
Finish: Dry Mouth, Smooth
Experience: Thank you Revision! You are on my list for go to beers when I need an amazing IPA. This is everything I was in an IPA; light malt, strong hop smell, and presence. You would not know that this was a 9.1% because it is so smooth with a little malt. Grade 5/5!
Dogfish Head Romantic Chemistry IPA
Bottled. No Date. ABV 7.2%
Appearance: Slight Hazy, Dark Amber, Thin light head.
Aroma: Malty, Toasted Nuts
Palate: Malt, Slight Stonefruit
Finish: Sweet, No Hops, Little Sour, Apple Juice
Experience: From my experience, Dogfish Head tend to have a strong malt backbone but was hoping for more hops (any hops).Overall, was not super stoked on this beer. I will continue to try beers from this brewery because they do make good beer just did not enjoy this beer. Grade 3.8/5.
Sierra Nevada Pronto IPA
Bottled. No Date. ABV 6.7%
Appearance: Slight Hazy, Amber, Finger width of white soapy head.
Aroma: Citrus, Floral, Earthy
Palate: Mango, Tropical Fruit, Grapefruit
Finish: Carmle, Toasted Nuts, Bitter (Grapefruit peel)
Experience: Been waiting for this one to come into work. Sierra Nevada brewed this beer just for our company. Says it’s an ale brewed with mango and hibiscus. This beer lived up to the hype I had for it. The mango and hibiscus were more on the nose and the palate was a great balance of malt and grapefruit (hops). Over all really good beer and will have to pick up another bottle to enjoy. Grade 4.6/5.
House of Pendragon Brewing Co. All Haze Sir Lancelot NE Style IPA
Bottled. No Date. ABV 7%
Color (Appearance): Hazy, Pineapple, Orange Juice. Half a finger of white soapy head.
Smell (Aroma): Danky, Earthy, Slight Tropical Fruits
Taste (Palate): Citrus, Pineapple, Light Body
Aftermath (Finish): Dry Mouth, Bitter
Experience: Yes, yes, yes! This was such a great beer. This was my third hazy NE style beer from HOP and this was their best so far. I was happy to see that they brought down the ABV because that allowed for more flavors to come through compared to the last two I have reviewed. This beer was not overly juicy, more hop profile, smooth and a definite crusher. Out of our small selection of local breweries that we have in Fresno, HOP is becoming one of my favorites in town (sorry Tioga-Sequoia). I enjoy that they have a new brew every Thursday and they truly showcase a handful of different style of beers. Grade 5/5.
Oskar Blues Brewery Old Chub Scotch Ale
Canned on 4/21/17 (reviewed 8/24/17). ABV 8%
Color: Deep Reddish-Brown, No Head
Smell: Dog Treats, Beef
Taste: Stout Body, Medium Body, Beef Jerky
Aftermath: Leather, Grainy, Fruit Leather (now sweet)
Experience: What are that smell and taste? I know beef and dog treats may throw you off but that is the first thing that came to mind. It has a deep fruit leather texture and taste. This was a really good beer and unique! Heavy in ABV so I wouldn’t be crushing a lot of these in one night, but a slow sipper to truly enjoy the complexity of the beer. Grade 4.8/5.
The Unknown Brewing Co. Hospitali-Tea Southern Amber Ale
Canned. No Date. ABV 5.6%
Color: Deep Amber, Hazy, Two-Finger Head
Smell: Citrus, Orange Peel, Sticks
Taste: Carmel (not malt), Light Body, Tea
Aftermath: Smooth, Slight Hops
Experience: One of my favorite east coast breweries that make delicious, amazing IPAs. I was super stoked when my friend sent this can to me and found out that it was a unique and new beer that I have not had or from them. This was a southern twist on the traditional amber ale. So good! Grade 4.6/5.
Lonerider Brewing Co. Hoppy Ki Yay IPA
Canned. Best by 11/2/17 (reviewed 8/24/17). ABV 6.6%
Color: Hazy, Amber, Two Finger Head
Smell: Zest, Grapefruit, Cleaning Products (???)
Taste: Malt, Medium Body
Aftermath: Sweet, Smooth
Experience: No hops. Canned says hopped with Columbus and Amarillo. Taste no hops at all. No dryness on the back end. Super upset about this beer. I have been striking out with IPAs lately. Makes me want to stop (haha) beer reviews and just stick with the IPAs I know are good. But again that is all part of the beer journey. Grade 2.6/5.
